Dokis: Since Time Immemorial
In August of 2024 the Ganawandaagwad Institute requested the permission of Dokis First Nation to digitize the book “Dokis: Since Time Immemorial” by Wayne F. Lebelle. Published in 2006, the book was written at the request of Dokis First Nation as a collaboration with the community.
In granting permission, Chief Gerry Duquette Jr. reminded us that the book does not include a representation of everyone or all events. He said that a follow up book is being looked at.
With that in mind we included the book since it is widely referenced. In fact, the Dokis Library has difficulty keeping copies available due to its tendency to disappear! In retrospect, it was quite ambitious to imagine that one book could capture generations of Dokis history in one version.
For now, we are adding a digital copy so that all community members (with internet access) can now read it. The book does provide pieces of the puzzle that are important to formulating a more complete picture of our shared story.
